Eater - Eater Live at Barbarellas (Birmingham) 30/08/77 (Anagram)
By Editor Blackpool Rox II (2005) submitted

Taken from the original reel-to-reel (well it wouldn’t be anything else then would it really!) summer of 1977 recording of then youngsters EATER playing on the same bill as Generation X and The Cortinas on the then burgeoning UK punk scene. Formed at school using equipment apparently acquired from Woolworths, they offer up 14 tracks which covers most of their classic singles and more familiar tunes (Outside View – Thinkin’ of the USA etc) as well as a not too bad at all rendition of David Bowie’s Queen Bitch. This stands up well as a tight and energetic set (with a fair bit of crowd interaction), and makes a great break from all the sanitised and overly well manicured swill that the music establishment pumps at us and tries to pass off as “real” music (not in our book!). I am not overly retrospective in my purchases these days (always panning for that next nugget of gold they don’t want us to find) but this is really worth getting hold of. It is made all the more enjoyable as track 15 is an extract from vocalist Andy Blade’s book (The Blade Chronicles) covers his recollections of the gig documenting his first encounter with Spizz, and track 16 which is a Prodigy like remix of “you ain’t got no brain”.
