Eels - One Day The World Will Be ready For You :
By ´Jonathan from Sunderland´ Blackpool Rox II 2005 submitted

Anybody who knows me well will tell you that I am not the biggest fan of American Music. Yet The Eels remain a staunch favourite of mine. What is also strange about my love for the Eels is that they are pretty much the polar opposite of the music I most love. What DO I love!? I hear you all ask.....Well, give me simple, loud, intelligent punk. Most of the time. It isn´t pretty, it isn´t intended to be. What The Eels specialise in, however is the polar opposite. Soft, gentle, complicated music which is indeed almost a work of art in itself. Instrumentally, you can expect everything from guitar to piano to violin to a choir. Lyrically, they are deep, emotional, sensitive. "Beautiful Freak" will be one of the most touchingly "sweet" songs you will ever hear. "Flower" provides a beautiful metaphor for anybody who has ever experienced truly difficult times. When you listen to it, it is easy to visualize the "Flower in a hailstorm" he is singing about. Not all of the music the Eels have made is depressing (which is quite surprising, considering E´s background. By the late nineties, he had lost his entire immediate family, including his sister, who committed suicide). Some of the songs appear to be quite naive on the surface. Whether they are or not, they are certainly very touching. A good example of this is the sublime "P.S. You Rock My World", an acoustic guitar based, simple melody, set in the wake of a funeral, and describes a simple, pure devotion, coupled with optimism. "Manchild" has a wonderfully touching chorus: "Hold me in your arms, and let me be the one, who can feel, like I am a love". Some of their music is surprisingly cheerful. "Last Stop: This Town" is a good example of this. "Rags to Rags" paints the picture of a man who see´s himself as false, a lie, yet he can also see a light at the end of the tunnel. They also fit in some social commentary, at least in the form of "Susan´s House" and, to an extent "Guest List". In short, if you are a lover of music, the Eels are well worth investigating. I should also point out here that this here review is based on "Beautiful Freak" and "Electro Shock Blues" only... but I am hoping to land a copy of "Daisies of The Galaxy" soon. Take care all. Next time we will go from the musical equivalent of a lovers caress to the musical equivalent of a punch in the face, in the form of the Sunderland born Punk foursome that is Leatherface. Beautiful Freak (9/10) Electro Shock Blues (7/10)
