  Superchunk - Majesty Shredding CD
By Minister of Order and Reason submitted

What have The Washington Post, Spin, Rolling Stone and Magnet all got in common ? They love this album and after two decades of releases by this band are belatedly adoring the outfit from Chapel Hill, North Carolina that were once the best answer to the post Husker Du wasteland of the early 90´s. That was an era of ´No Pocky for Kitty´ and ´On The Mouth´ on their then DIY Merge label, that still to be honest occupy a certain nostalgic pride of place in my vinyl collection. Is this then the rebirth of the ´Chunk as a force to be reckoned with ? ... Well yes and no. MS offers 11 tracks that typically fall somewhere in-between their 2 early classics and the more ambient muted introspection of their late 90´s albums such as Here´s Where The Strings Come in and Indoor Living. I do like this album, as I like all their material, however whilst it offers odd flashes of the angst (Rope Light for instance) and glimpses of the high velocity, layered overdrive which made them the era´s kings subtle feedback it is good but by no means great. After an absence of almost 10 years of releasing material, I was understandably excited about getting this album .... however when I started seeing the pre-release plaudits that had appeared in publications like The Washington fucking Post my enthusiasm was tempered somewhat. Mac´s strained vocals will always be a cry for help and a factor in the complex equation that once moved me to get a Superchunk tattoo on my forearm - so can I still wear their badge on my sleeve (not just metaphorically) ? Well after three listens to Majesty Shredding I think so .... I guess we all mellow a little as we age, but I think there is a monster lurking in these here arrangements that would still put the best of UK indie to the sword. I just wish it would reveal itself and devour us rather than bare its teeth in the odd chorus and middle 8 before disappearing back into the depths ..... (8/10) http://superchunk.com/
